Eight players scored Tuesday night as the Central Lady Falcons closed the regular season with a 54-27 win over Tuscaloosa County.
Lawanda Maddix, Meagan Prude and D’Leisha Dent were honored on their Senior Night.
Central coach Michael Rivers said Dent won AHSAA Class 5A shot put title Monday in the indoor championships.
Central utilized an active man-to-man defense to set up the offense. The Lady Falcons closed the third quarter with a 16-2 run to take a 39-18 lead.
"We got exactly what we wanted to," Rivers said. "We decided a couple of days ago our strength has always been man-to-man pressure on the ball, even with our bigs. We made a conscious decision from here on out we’re just going straight at them, man-to-man, regardless of the fouls. We’re going to play intense basketball up and down the floor. We’re going to play our style of basketball.
"We were playing it safe throughout the year, but now we don’t have any regard for safety because we’re trying to win and we’re trying to advance."
Traniya Pitts scored 12 points to lead Central (17-7). Jerlissa Matthews and Maddix had 10 points each, and Shawntayla Harris had eight points.
"We have a very unselfish team," Rivers said. "My assistant coach, Tyrone Jones, preaches all the time at practice: move the ball. If you move the ball, we get easy baskets. If there’s a lead person, they get it out of their hands and get it to her.’
Katie Krout scored 16 points to lead the Lady Wildcats (9-15). Krout scored 10 points in the second half. Ayana Tyree had five points.
TCHS plays Hillcrest, the host team, at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the Class 6A, Area 13 tournament. Central will host the Class 5A, Area 7 tournament.
Paul W. Bryant plays McAdory at 5:30 p.m. Thursday. Central plays Brookwood at 7 p.m.
Central 73, McAdory 50
Lawanda Maddix led the Central High School girls basketball team with a game-high 28 points as the Lady Falcons wrapped up the 5A Area 7 championship by taking down McAdory on the road Monday night.
Jada Prewitt had 19 points and Jerlissa Matthews scored 14 points for Central. McAdory was led by Sydney Thurston with 24 points.
