WEST ALABAMA HEROES: Markeith Madison drops 30 on Miles

Here is how some former Tuscaloosa-area high school athletes now competing at the collegiate level fared last week:

 

MEN'S BASKETBALL

---- Alabama-Huntsville sophomore guard Wayne Dedrick (Hillcrest High School) ranks third in the Gulf South Conference with 18.5 points per game. He leads the GSC in free throw percentage (.855) and ranks fourth in three-point field goals made (2.68) per game.

---- Meridian Community College freshman guard Donald King, Jr. (Greensboro High School) is averaging 8.8 points in 10 games this season.

---- Middle Tennessee senior forward Nieko Hunter (Greene County High) averaged 7.5 points per game in wins over East Carolina and Old Dominion.

---- Mississippi Valley State freshman forward James Currington, Jr. (Paul W. Bryant High School) averaged nine points and 9.5 rebounds against Jackson State and Grambling. He recorded a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds in the win over Grambling.

---- Pensacola State College sophomore guard RaAnthony Sanders (Holt High School) recorded 10 points, two rebounds and two assists in the loss to Northwest Florida State.

---- Shelton State sophomore guard Jalen Houston (Hillcrest High School) scored 10 points and dished out two assists against Marion Military.

---- Shelton State freshman forward Justin Simon (Aliceville High School) had nine points, 11 rebounds and three blocked shots in the win over Marion Military.

---- Stillman College junior center Markeith Madison (Hillcrest High School) turned in his best game of the season with 30 points (12-for-20 FG) and 12 rebounds in the win over in-state rival Miles. It was his second double-double of the season. Over his last four games, Madison is averaging 23.5 points for the Tigers.

---- Stillman College senior center Torrean Walker (Hillcrest High School) recorded 10 points and nine rebounds in the win over Miles.

---- West Alabama senior guard Sandy Underwood (Bibb County High) recorded 12 points and five assists against Delta State.

 

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

---- Alabama senior guard Shafontaye Myers (Sunshine High School) averaged 16 points and six rebounds in SEC losses to Florida and Tennessee.

---- Alabama-Huntsville junior forward Jaunice Newton (Sumter County High School) ranks second in the GSC with 9.3 rebounds per game. Newton has recorded nine double-figure rebound games this season, including 14 rebounds in her most recent game against Delta State.

---- Shelton State sophomore guard Kaitlyn Taylor (Holy Spirit High School) tallied four points, three rebounds and three assists in the win over Southern Union.

---- Stillman junior guard Andrea Moore (Hillcrest High School) tallied eight points and four rebounds in the win over Miles.

---- Mississippi State senior point guard Katia May (Sumter County High) turned in her best game of the season with 17 points, five assists, five steals and two rebounds in the win over Georgia. For the week, May averaged 14.5 points (13-for-17 FG) and four assists per game against LSU and Georgia.

 

BASEBALL

---- AUM junior second baseman Trevor Sprowl (Tuscaloosa County High School) went 4-for-10 with five runs scored, two doubles and three RBIs in the season-opening series against Tennessee Wesleyan.

---- AUM senior shortstop Lance Wilson (Hillcrest High School) went 5-for-10 with five runs scored, two RBIs, two walks and one stolen base against Tennessee Wesleyan.

---- Shelton State sophomore left-hander Dillion Williams (American Christian Academy) threw two scoreless innings with two strikeouts as the Bucs opening day starter against Motlow State.

---- Stillman senior catcher Brad Sevenish (Tuscaloosa County High School) went 3-for-9 with three RBIs in the Tigers season-opening series at Loyola-New Orleans.

---- Stillman senior pitcher Tyler Vails (Pickens Academy) recorded a save in his 2014 debut at Loyola-New Orleans. He threw one scoreless inning in the Tigers 3-1 win.

 

TRACK AND FIELD

---- Southern Miss freshman Sharday Branch (Central High School) posted a 17-01.25 long jump at the USM Invitational.

---- Southern Miss freshman Derrick Johnson (Northridge High School) ran a 22:42 in the 200-meters at the USM Invitational.

---- Southern Miss freshman Christopher Monroe (Northridge High School) placed second in the triple jump (48-00) at the USM Invitational.

---- Southern Miss sophomore Courtland Wells (Northridge High School) placed fourth in the high jump (6-04.75) and seventh in the 60-meter hurdles (8:36) at the USM Invitational.

 

SWIMMING AND DIVING

---- Kentucky freshman Kelly Berger (Tuscaloosa County High School) won 1000-yard freestyle (10:01.56) in the Lady Wildcats 186-106 dual meet win over Cincinnati.

----  Rice sophomore Cora McKenzie (Tuscaloosa Academy) competed in six events at the UH Quad Meet. McKenzie was  on two first-place relay teams and finished third in the 50 freestyle (23.79). She helped the Owls win the 400 yard medley relay (3:46.77) and 200 yard freestyle relay (1:34.46). She also competed in the 400 yard freestyle relay (2nd), 200 yard medley relay (3rd) and 100 yard freestyle (6th).
