WEST ALABAMA HEROES: Tabb wins SWAC’s Player of Week honor

Here is how some former Tuscaloosa-area high school athletes now competing at the collegiate level fared last week:
Alabama freshman forward Jimmie Taylor (Greensboro High School) recorded two points, six rebounds, two blocked shots and one steal in the Crimson Tide’s 75-67 loss at UCLA.
Alabama A&M senior guard/forward Demarquelle Tabb (Greensboro High School) was the Southwestern Athletic Conference Player of the Week for his performance against UAB. The 6-foot-5 senior came off the bench and scored 18 points to go along with 12 rebounds, three blocked shots, two assists and two steals in 30 minutes of action against the Blazers. He is averaging 11 points, six rebounds and three blocked shots per game for the Bulldogs.
Alabama-Huntsville sophomore guard Wayne Dedrick (Hillcrest High School) leads the Gulf South Conference with 21.2 points per game this season. In 10 games, Dedrick has scored 20 or more six times. He leads the league in 3-pointers made (34). He is second in the league in free-throw percentage (87.8) and 3-point percentage (40.5).
Columbus State junior guard/forward Dimitri Davis (Tuscaloosa County High School) is averaging 2.4 points and 2.2 rebounds in eight games for the Cougars.
Middle Tennessee senior forward Neiko Hunter (Greene County High) averaged 16 points, 4.5 rebounds and two blocked shots in the Dr. Pepper Classic in Chattanooga, Tenn. He scored 20 points and grabbed seven rebounds in an overtime loss to Maine in the opening round.
Northeastern junior forward Reggie Spencer (Hillcrest High) is averaging 10.1 points and 7.2 rebounds for the Huskies this season. He ranks ninth in the Colonial Athletic Association in rebounding.
West Alabama senior guard Sandy Underwood (Bibb County High) is averaging 18.4 points and 4.4 rebounds in nine games for the Tigers. He is third in the Gulf South in scoring.
Alabama senior guard Shafontaye Myers (Sunshine High School) averaged 13 points, four rebounds and one assist in a pair of games at the Cavalier Classic in Charlottesville, Va. Myers scored 16 points in the Crimson Tide’s 82-60 win over Coppin State in the consolation game.
Alabama-Huntsville junior forward Juanice Newton (Sumter County High) is averaging 8.0 points and 8.0 rebounds per game of the Lady Chargers. She scored a season-high 14 points against Delta State.
Mississippi State senior point guard Katia May (Sumter County High) scored eight points and dished out three assists in the blowout win over Mississippi Valley State. For the season, May is averaging 7.4 points and 6.1 assists per game. She is third in the Southeastern Conference in assists heading into league play.
