WEST ALABAMA HEROES: DaMarcus James sets Jacksonville State record


Jacksonville State junior running back DaMarcus James (Demopolis High School) was the Ohio Valley Conference Offensive Player of the Week for his performance against Tennessee-Martin. James carried the ball 23 times for 184 yards and three touchdowns. He scored on an 8-yard touchdown three minutes into the game, marking the first FCS team to score against the Skyhawks in the first half this season. With the Gamecocks leading by seven points in the fourth quarter, James added a 1-yard touchdown run and four minutes later scored on a 50-yard scamper to put the game out of reach. Here is how some former Tuscaloosa-area high school athletes now competing at the collegiate level fared last week:

FOOTBALL

Alabama sophomore receiver Parker Barrineau (American Christian Academy) made his Crimson Tide playing debut in the 45-3 win over Georgia State. He recorded a 6-yard reception and was one of 15 players with at least one catch in the homecoming win.

Alabama junior Vinnie Sunseri (Northridge High School) recorded two tackles and one pass breakup as the starting strong safety in the Crimson Tide’s 45-3 win over Georgia State.

Alabama sophomore Darren Lake (Sumter Central High School) recorded one tackle in the 45-3 win over Georgia State.

Alabama State sophomore Najee Bright (Linden High School) started at free safety and recorded one tackle in the Hornets’ 34-2 win at Texas Southern. ASU held TSU to 185 total yards.

Alabama State junior Derrick Billups (Aliceville High School) started at left defensive tackle and recorded one tackle for loss in the win over Texas Southern. The ASU defense held TSU to minus-38 rushing yards on 29 attempts.

Alabama State senior linebacker Maurice Tate (Linden High School) had a big game in the win over Texas Southern, with five tackles, one sack (minus-4 yards) and a 3-yard interception return. The interception set up a third-quarter field goal and extended the Hornets’ lead to 31-0.

Auburn backup defensive end Justin Delaine (Linden High School) had one quarterback pressure in the Tigers’ 30-22 win over Ole Miss.

Benedict College sophomore linebacker LaMarcus Hudson (Sumter Central High School) had one tackle in the Tigers’ 27-13 loss to Miles.

Benedict College sophomore linebacker Kevin McCollum (Sumter Central High School) was the leading tackler for the second straight week with eight tackles in the loss to Miles.

Benedict College sophomore linebacker Charles Powell (Greene County High School) recorded four tackles in the loss to Miles.

Birmingham-Southern junior Michael Ferguson (Northside High School) made his fifth straight start at left guard in the Panthers’ 31-28 loss to rival Sewanee.

Chattanooga junior Toyvain Brand (Hillcrest High School) recorded two tackles, one for loss (minus-2 yards) in the 42-21 win over Western Carolina. The Mocs defense held the Catamounts to 98 rushing yards.

Coffeyville (Kan.) Community College sophomore cornerback Jamarcus Howard (Northridge High School) recorded three tackles, one for loss (minus-2 yards) and one pass breakup in the 21-14 loss to Highland Community College.

Delta State senior Andre Lucious (Tuscaloosa County High School) started at left guard in the Statesmen’s 48-14 loss at West Alabama.

Iowa Wesleyan College sophomore offensive lineman Ja’Korey Walker (Fayette County High School) started at left guard and helped the Tigers record a season-high 418 total yards and 51 points in a 68-51 loss to Martin Luther College.

Jackson State sophomore defensive lineman Jamal Jones (Livingston High School) recorded one tackle in the Tigers’ 42-33 win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

Jackson State junior offensive lineman Danny Williams (Tuscaloosa County High School) started at left guard in the Tigers nine-point win against Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Williams and the offensive front paved the way for Tommy Gooden’s 214 rushing yards and four touchdowns.

Jacksonville State junior Max Holcombe (Hillcrest High School) was the starting as Jacksonville State went on the road and topped No. 22 Tennessee-Martin 41-27. JSU piled up 438 total yards and scored five touchdowns.

Miles College junior offensive lineman Aderius Hood (Greene County High School) started at left tackle in the Golden Bears’ 27-13 win over Benedict. Miles racked up 377 total yards and averaged 5.6 yards per play in the conference win.

Miles College junior offensive lineman Eddie Thomas (Livingston High School) started at right guard in the win over Albany State. Miles’ offensive line has allowed only one sack in the last two games.

Mississippi State junior tight end Malcolm Johnson (Northridge High School) had two catches for 19 yards in the Bulldogs’ 59-26 loss to LSU.

North Alabama senior safety Caleb Massey (Sulligent High School) anchored a defense that limited                 Shorter to 171 total yards, including 71 passing yards in a 41-0 win. Massey recorded three tackles.

North Alabama backup linebacker Kendrick Sparks (Fayette County High School) recorded one tackle in the Lions’ 41-0 win over Shorter.

North Alabama sophomore Markeldon Washington (Fayette County High School) saw action in the receiver rotation in the win over Shorter.

North Alabama sophomore quarterback Luke Wingo (Hillcrest High School) completed 8 of 15 passes for 129 yards with one touchdown in the Lions’ 41-0 win over Shorter.

South Alabama redshirt freshman offensive lineman Steven Foster (Demopolis High School) saw action as the backup left tackle in the Jaguars’ 34-33 loss at Troy. The Jaguars offense piled up 630 yards and averaged 8.6 yards per play.

Southern Miss senior defensive back Alex Walters (Tuscaloosa County High School) recorded one tackle in the 24-23 loss to FIU.

Stillman College sophomore receiver Hudson Cain (American Christian Academy) caught three passes for 17 yards in the Tigers’ 28-27 loss to Lane College.

Stillman College junior wide receiver Raymond Coats (Paul W. Bryant High School) was one of four starting receivers in the Tigers’ one-point loss to Lane. He caught three passes for 17 yards, including a 7-yard touchdown reception that tied the game at 21 late in the third quarter.

Stillman senior offensive lineman Charles Hope (Bibb County High School) started at left guard and helped pave the way for 582 total yards. The Tigers averaged 7 yards per play in the one-point loss to Lane.

Stillman senior offensive lineman Derrick Miles (American Christian Academy) started at right tackle in the loss to Lane. The offensive line allowed only two sacks in 45 pass attempts in the one-point loss.

Troy redshirt freshman Luke Lawrence (Hillcrest High School) saw action as the backup left guard in the Trojans’ 34-33 win over South Alabama.

Troy freshman linebacker Terris Lewis (Linden High School) recorded two tackles, one for loss (minus-2 yards), in the win over South Alabama.

Tuskegee junior linebacker El’ Malik Chinn (Tuscaloosa County High School) had 11 tackles, including 1.5 for loss and one sack, and one pass breakup in the Golden Tigers’ 21-13 win against Fort Valley State.

Tuskegee junior defensive back Tyrin Thurman (Tuscaloosa County High School) started at strong safety and posted five tackles in the win over Fort Valley State.

UAB junior defensive lineman Diaheem Watkins (Bibb County High School) started at defensive end and recorded three tackles, including a sack (minus-5 yards), in a 37-23 loss to Florida Atlantic.

West Alabama senior Ben Brooks (Sumter County High School) recorded three tackles, one for loss, and one pass breakup in the 48-14 win over Delta State. The Tigers held the Statesmen to minus-7 rushing yards on 20 attempts.

West Alabama sophomore Quinton Harton (Paul W. Bryant High School) recorded two tackles in the Tigers’ win over Delta State.

Western Kentucky senior linebacker Chuck Franks (Fayette County High School) recorded one tackle in a 31-10 win at Louisiana-Monroe.

VOLLEYBALL

Stillman College sophomore setter and outside hitter Hannah Burr (American Christian Academy) recorded eight kills and seven digs in a five-set win against Lane.
