ROUNDUP: Paul W. Bryant shut out at Pelham


PELHAM | Devon Mines scored three touchdowns and rushed for 101 yards on nine carries to lead Pelham over Paul W. Bryant 28-0 Friday night. 

Mines had touchdown runs of 24 and 42 yards in the second quarter and added a 1-yard touchdown run with 1:07 remaining in the third quarter.

Logan Burnett returned an interception 14 yards for a touchdown, and the Pelham defense held Paul Bryant to only 53 total yards in the shutout victory. Josh Brasher and Christian Davis led the Pelham defense in tackles, with six and five, respectively.

Pelham racked up 294 total yards of offense, with 256 coming on the ground.

Paul W. Bryant (0-1) travels to McAdory next Friday.

 

Bessemer City 60,

Sumter Central 20

BESSEMER | Bessemer City rolled to a 38-7 halftime lead and posted a lopsided home victory over Sumter Central to open the season.

The Purple Tigers had several outstanding players. Brandon Byner led the team with 163 all-purpose yards, while Tre Armstrong was the leading rusher with 112 yards and two touchdowns on 12 carries and Stanley Woods had 100 yards and a score on nine carries. Eric Castellio had 10 points with seven extra-point kicks and a 33-yard field goal.

Marcus Key sparked the defense with a 77-yard return of an interception for a touchdown and Jeremiah Jones had three sacks.

Sumter Central (0-1) hosts Saraland next Friday.

 

Lamar County 41,

South Lamar 0

VERNON | Alex Wheeler rushed for 113 yards and three touchdowns as the Lamar County Bulldogs shut out South Lamar.

Lamar County overcame 13 penalties and had a solid run game that piled up 309 yards on 30 attempts.

Joshua Smith had eight tackles and one sack to lead the Bulldog defense.

Lamar County (1-0) hosts Oakman next Friday night. South Lamar (0-1) will host Pickens County.

 

Francis Marion 30,

Ellwood Christian Academy 12

MARION | Francis Marion’s Kenny Mickens led the offense with 140 yards rushing and three touchdowns in a defeat of Ellwood Christian Academy.

Michael Griffin had eight tackles. Aaron Pryor had seven tackels. 

Francis Marion (1-0) hosts R.C. Hatch next Friday.
