TUSCALOOSA | A rally in the bottom of the seventh was not enough as Gordo lost 3-1 to Cordova in the Class 3A softball North Central Regional on Saturday.
Megan Quimby hit a leadoff double in the seventh. Riley Carpenter came in as a courtesy runner and stole third base. Cassidy Harder laid down a sacrifice bunt to push Carpenter across.
The last two Greenwave hitters grounded out and struck out to end the game.
Harder took the loss. She pitched a complete game and gave up six hits, three runs, one walk and struck out one.
Anna Gayle Norris had a single. Quimby had a single paired with the double, and Sarah McDaniel had a double.
"Cordova has a great pitcher," Gordo (27-11) coach Shawn McDaniel said. "They’re a good ballclub. We made a bad throw and came up short. It was a good tight ballgame, and one mistake can cost the game."
"These girls have worked very hard this season," Shawn McDaniel said. "They’re a great group of girls. I’m looking forward to next year and their perseverance. Now they know what it takes. They know we can’t have one mistake. We can’t have any mistakes. One mistake can cost you a ballgame. They did a great job. I’m very proud of our girls."
A three-run third inning was enough to put Gordo ahead for good.
Megan Quimby started things off in the third with a triple. Haleigh Junkin followed with a blooper single that scored Quimby. Another single by Meaghan Jackson and a double by Joy Moorehead scored Junking. An error by Vinemont pushed Gordo’s lead to 4-2.
Gordo brought in pitcher Cassidy Hardy in the fourth inning to close out the game. Hardy (18-7) held the Eagles to one hit while walking two batters and recording four strikeouts.
Anna Gayle Norris and Brooke Perrigin each had two singles, and Hannah Dyer had three.
