TUSCALOOSA | The Hillcrest softball team opened the Class 6A North Central Regional with 10 hits Friday and downed Hoover 10-3.
Desiree Morrow, who went 3-for-4 and drove in three runs, launched a two-run home run in the sixth inning. Sam Cummings hit a three-run homer in the fourth.
Senior shortstop Anna Blake Barnette went 2-for-4 and drove in a run.
Hoover took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but the Lady Patriots answered with three runs in their half. Hillcrest (45-17) took the lead for good with a run in the second inning.
"They jumped out on us quick at 3-0," Hillcrest coach Ted Swinney said. "We came out a little flat. We felt a little bit of pressure on us at first, and then we settled down and played good. We did a great job of putting pressure on them. We had some bunts, and we stole a couple of bases and then we had some big home runs there to really put it away."
Allison Freeeman (19-7) pitched a complete game to get the win. She allowed eight hits, two walks and one earned run.
"She didn’t really hit her spots early, but she calmed down after that and did a great job," Swinney said.
Hillcrest is scheduled to play Hewitt-Trussville at 7 this morning. Hewitt-Trussville defeated Mountain Brook 6-4.
