GIRLS ROUNDUP: TCHS wins two games in tournament action

TUSCALOOSA | Tuscaloosa County High School beat Paul W. Bryant and defeated Northside in the pool play portion of the City-County softball tournament on Friday at Holy Spirit.

In the first game, Jenna Ewing went 3-for-3 with a double, a triple and two RBIs to lead Tuscaloosa County to a five-inning, 11-0 rout of Paul W. Bryant.

Aleca Rigsby hit 2-for-2 with an RBI, and Katie Bundy, Lindsey Turner and Savannah Lunceford had two RBIs apiece.

Bundy (4-6) also was the winning pitcher, throwing a complete game with five strikeouts, one walk and two hits allowed.

In the second game, TCHS defeated Northside 8-4 on another 3-for-3 performance by Ewing, who also had a double and a three-run home run.

Turner went 2-for-2 with a double and a pair of RBIs, and Rainey and Lunceford were each 2-for-3.

Also, Rainey (3-3) picked up the win on the mound, throwing 313 innings with five hits allowed, two walks and five strikouts.

For Northside, Riley Malone was 2-for-2 and Haley Barnette had a triple with two RBIs.

Tuscaloosa County (11-10) will face Holy Spirit at 9:30 a.m. today at American Christian Academy.


Marengo Academy 11, Sumter Academy 0 (5 IN)

LINDEN | Chandler Stenz was 3-for-3 with a triple, an RBI and three stolen bases to lead Marengo Academy to a rout of Sumter Academy in a Class 1A, Region 2, Area 2, matchup.

Marengo’s winnning pitcher was Anna Michael Crocker (4-0), who threw a complete game shutout with six strikeouts, four hits allowed and a walk.

Offensively for Marengo, Brooke Smyly hit 2-for-3 with a double and a pair of RBIs, Conner Etheridge was 2-for-3 with an RBI, Katie Tucker was 1-for-2 with an RBI, Reesa Holyfield hit 1-for-1 with an RBI and a pair of walks and Taylor Barley hit 1-for-2 and two stolen bases.

For Sumter Academy, Mary Winfield picked up the loss, pitching three innings with a pair of strikouts but 12 hits allowed and 10 runs allowed, seven of which were earned.

Marengo Academy (16-0, 4-0) will play a split doubleheader today in Alabaster, facing Coosa Valley at 2 p.m. and Kingwood Christian at 4 p.m.


Gordo wins two games

VERNON | Gordo picked up two wins on Friday in the Vernon Bulldog Classic, first defeating host Lamar County and then routing South Lamar.

In the first game, Megan Quimby was 2-for-3 with an RBI as Gordo downed Lamar County 5-2.

Haleigh Junkin (5-3) pitched all six innings, allowing two hits, two walks and two runs.

For Lamar County, Anna Whitford was 1-for-2 with an RBI and Elizabeth Hassel picked up the loss, pitching a complete game with four strikeouts, two walks, and five hits allowed.

In the second game, Gordo crushed South Lamar 14-2 in a game that only lasted three innings due to time constraints.

Cassidy Hardy (7-3) was the winning pitcher, striking out four with three walks, three hits allowed and three innings pitched.

Hardy was also 1-for-2 with a pair of RBIs, Anna Gayle Norris was 2-for-3 with four RBIs and two runs scored, Mollie Hall was 1-for-2 with two RBIs and two runs scored and Quimby was 1-for-2 with an RBI.

For South Lamar, Hannah Cox was the losing pitcher, striking out one but allowing three walks and eight runs in two innings of work.

Also for South Lamar, Karoline Holsonback was 2-for-2 with an RBI.

Gordo (12-6) will play Sulligent today at 10 a.m. in Vernon.
