BROOKWOOD | The American Christian Academy softball team overcame a couple of deficits Friday and defeated Northridge 8-3 in the Tuscaloosa City-County Tournament.
Rachel Skelton belted a three-run homer as ACA took the lead for good with four runs in the second inning. The game ended in the top of the fifth because of a time limit.
"It’s an older group," ACA coach Billy White said. "We have seniors that lead the way. We’re not fazed by any time of situation. It seems like we’re not fazed, but we battle. Every inning they seem to battle."
With one out in the bottom of the second, Taylor Mize reached on an error, and Taylor Stamps bunted for a single. Chandler Dare singled in Mize. Skelton, who struck out her first time up, launched a drive over the center-field fence. Her fourth homer of the season gave the Lady Patriots a 6-2 lead.
"That was a momentum swing right there," White said. "You could tell that everything shifted after that (homer). It’s nice to have those. We’ll take those any time."
In the fourth, Stamps led off with a double and scored on Dare’s triple. Dare scored when Skelton grounded out. Dare, a senior shortstop and leadoff hitter, went 3-for-3, scored three runs and drove in two.
In the first inning, Dare singled and scored on a double by Meagan Osment. A two-out single by Lauren Mullenix drove in Osment, and ACA had a 2-1 lead.
Northridge got its first run in the top of the first. Hunter Slayton reached on a fielder’s choice and stole second. Montana Taylor singled, advancing Slayton to third. Taylor took third on a throw to the plate, and Savannah Buck reached on an error. Kersey Hunt singled to drive in Slayton.
ACA pitcher Lashley Graham got out of the inning with a strikeout and an infield fly.
Northridge took a 3-2 lead in the second. Jasmine Thompson tripled and scored on a single by Sami Story. After stealing second, Story scored on Slayton’s single.
Skelton, playing in right field, made a running catch along the foul line and threw to Dare at second base for an inning-ending double play.
Graham pitched 4 1/3 innings to get the win. She allowed seven hits and a walk and struck out three. Mickenzie Sparks pitched three innings in taking the loss. She gave up six hits and six runs with one walk and five strikeouts.
"We started off in the first inning and left the bases loaded," Northridge coach Denton Bowling said. "We weren’t able to capitalize. We managed to get one run out of that with one out, so that wasn’t good enough.
"All credit to them. They came in, top to bottom, put the ball in play and moved around the bases pretty good."
