CARROLLTON | Whitney Lowe, who started playing varsity softball at Pickens Academy as an eighth-grader, has one more season with the Lady Pirates and then she’s off to college.
Lowe recently signed to play for East Mississippi Community College in Scooba.
"That was like the biggest accomplishment I’ve had in high school," said Lowe, a member of the volleyball and basketball teams. "It’s always been my dream to play softball in college. I guess I knew then that I had finally done it. I accomplished everything that I had been working for ever since I started playing softball."
Lowe said her ultimate goals for her senior season are to help the Lady Pirates win an AISA championship and to hit higher than .400.
"It did take a little pressure off me," she said of the signing. "I didn’t feel like I had to do so much to prove myself. I feel like I’ve already proved myself, and I can have more fun and not be so pressured to do good.
"It’s really important to me. I feel like I accomplished a lot in my life because I’ve been able to do that. Not many people from Pickens Academy have been able to do that, so we’re bringing the program out a lot now that we’re signing."
Lowe said the East Mississippi coaching staff and the school’s location influenced her decision.
"I really liked the coaches over there, and I like where it is," said Lowe, who is interested in pursuing a career in nursing. "It’s not too far, but it’s not too close. I like how it’s kind of a small school. It’s not too big, so I’ll have a lot of one-on-one time. I really like the players over there, too."
Lowe expects to start at first base, but Pickens Academy coach Wade Goodman said she might see action at third.
