BOYS ROUNDUP: Bryant beats Greensboro in heavyweight fight

REENSBORO | The Paul W. Bryant High School boys basketball team defeated the Greensboro Raiders 54-47 Wednesday in a battle between ranked teams.
Paul W. Bryant, 2-1 against Greensboro this season, is No. 2 in Class 5A in the latest Alabama Sports Writers Association poll. Greensboro, the two-time defending state champion, is No. 1 in Class 3A.
Paul W. Bryant (18-3) limited Greensboro to three field goals in the first half and led 27-15. Greensboro cut the deficit to 38-36 by the end of the third quarter. Paul W. Bryant’s Kevin Holland went 5 for 6 from the foul line and scored seven of his 18 points in the fourth quarter. James Currington led the Stampede with 19 points and 12 rebounds. He had four steals, three assists and three blocked shots. Holland had four steals. Demontae Duff had 11 rebounds, and Marcus Anthony led the Stampede with six assists.
Greensboro’s Kavoris Owens had 15 points, and Donald King scored 14. Jimmie Taylor, a 6-foot-9 University of Alabama signee, scored all 10 of his points in the second half.
Greensboro made 21 of 30 free throws. Paul W. Bryant made nine of 17 foul shots.
Paul W. Bryant plays Bibb County tonight in Centreville. Greensboro faces Greene County Friday in Eutaw in a Class 3A, Area 6 game.
Tuscaloosa Academy 56, Bessemer Academy 34
BESSEMER | Torrence Brown, who has recovered from the knee injury he suffered during football season, scored 12 points in seven minutes to lead the Knights.
Kwuan Whtifield scored nine points and collected 10 rebounds as the Knights improved to 15-3 overall, 1-0 in AISA Class AAA area play.
Thirteen players dressed out for Tuscaloosa Academy, and nine wound up scoring.
Tuscaloosa Academy plays in Prattville tonight, facing East Memorial Christian Academy.
