GIRLS ROUNDUP: Williams, Evans lead Greensboro to title


WETUMPKA | Malesha Williams scored 31 points and Elexis Evans added another 25 to go with 18 rebounds to lead Greensboro’s girls basketball team to the championship of the Johnson-Bazemore Christmas Tournament on Saturday.

Williams, the tournament’s MVP, had five rebounds, five steals and five assists in the title game. Evans had four steals. Greensboro’s Shawnderyl Watford had five points, nine rebounds and three assists, and Jashundra Hoskins had seven rebounds and three steals.

The high scorer for Wetumpka was Alaysha Clark with 17 points.

Greensboro (8-7) plays Sunshine in the first round of the Hale County Tournament at Akron on Thursday.

 

Athens 47,

Northridge 43

HANCEVILLE | Athens won the championship game to win the Yuletide Classic which was played at Wallace State-Hanceville.

Northridge’s Kiana Johnson and Shameka Tubbs made the all-tournament team. Johnson scored 15 and Tubbs 13 in the championship final, while Athens’ Alliyah Smith led all scorers with 16 points.

Northridge will play Bessemer City on Jan. 11.

 

Ramsey 56,

Central 54, OT

TUSCALOOSA | A last-second shot in overtime rimmed out and dashed No. 7-ranked Central’s hopes of a second overtime as it fell in the championship game of Central’s Falcon Invitational.

With Central leading 48-46 in regulation, Ramsey’s Olivia Chapman made two free throws to send the game into overtime. She ended the game with 22 points. Ramsey’s Katlyn Robinson also scored in double figures with 15 points.

Shawntayla Harris had 11 points and 12 rebounds and was one of three Lady Falcons (12-2) who scored in double digits. Jerlissa Matthews had 18 points and Toborsha Holley 15.

Central plays at Holt on Friday.

Matthews scored 22 points and had three assists fin Central’s 72-39 win over Akron earlier. Harris had 18 points and 10 rebounds. Holley had 14 points and three assists. Angelica Weatherspoon had 11 points.

Akron was paced by Valencia McCain with 12 points and 10 rebounds and LovPrincess Harris with 12 points and four rebounds. DeQuandra Lyles made the all-tournament team.

Southern Academy 37,

Clarke Prep 24

SELMA | Southern Academy claimed the championship of the Morgan Academy Tournament.

Leading the win with 10 points was Shelbie Clary.

Southern Academy plays at South Choctaw Academy on Friday.

 

Marengo Academy 56,

Russell Christian 6

BUTLER | In the championship game of the War on the Floor Tournament at Patrician Academy, Katie Tucker scored 18 points and had seven steals to lead Marengo Academy. Brooke Smyly had nine points and five blocks.

Tucker and Chandler Stenz made the all-tournament team.

Marengo Academy (14-0) plays next Saturday in Linden against Kingwood Christian.

 

Tuscaloosa Academy 45,

Wayne Academy (Miss.) 32

BUTLER | The scoring leaders for Tuscaloosa Academy were Hallie Harrison and Kaci Cochran with nine points.

Tuscaloosa Academy’s Krissy Pruitt made the War on the Floor all-tournament team.

Tuscaloosa Academy (11-4) plays Jackson Prep on Friday in the Jackson Prep tournament.
