COTTONDALE | Eight of 10 players wound up scoring Thursday night as the Paul W. Bryant girls basketball team defeated Bibb County 52-20.

"I would rate it as a really good performance," said Paul W. Bryant coach NeQuesha Jones. "We were trying to work on our man-to-man defense that we needed to work on anyway. We had to do what we had to do. It wasn’t so much about the other team. I wanted them to make sure they were doing their assignments."

Paul W. Bryant (4-5) led from start to finish, building an 8-2 lead by the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Jade Ledet sank two free throws to start the Lady Stampede on a 12-0 run. When Bria Smith scored with an offensive rebound, the Lady Stampede had a 20-2 lead.

Bibb County’s first points of the quarter came on a 3-point play by Constance Bell at the 2:11 mark.

Paul W. Bryant finished the half with a 28-6 lead and held a 39-15 advantage at the start of the fourth quarter.

"Certain quarters I was pleased, and certain quarters I wasn’t," Jones said. "I think we had too many fouls and didn’t slide our feet as much as we should have. We used our hands too much."

Tila Green, a junior guard, led the Lady Stampede with 15 points, six steals and five rebounds.

"I think she did well," Jones said. "We had all but two people score. We did play defense enough to make them to turn it over, and we ran the offense. We just did a very good job."

Ledet added 10 points. Shannel Washington scored nine, and Smith had six points.

Jonita Henry and Bell scored six points each for Bibb County (1-4).

"We’re a work in progress," said Bibb County’s first-year coach Russ Wallace. "We’re young, and we don’t have a lot of depth. We’ve been working on fundamentals. They’ve got to learn the game of basketball, and it takes time."

Paul W. Bryant plays at Central tonight in a Class 5A, Area 7 game. Bibb County plays at West Blocton tonight in a Class 4A, Area 7 game.
