TUSCALOOSA | D’Tone Cox fouled out with 2:21 left in Tuesday’s basketball game, but she did enough to ensure a victory for the Holt Lady Ironmen.
Cox finished with a team-high 12 points, including four of her team’s seven points in the fourth quarter, and Holt defeated American Christian Academy 39-28 in a Class 3A, Area 7 game.
"D’Tone is the one who makes us go," Holt (4-5, 1-0) coach Torrance Beard said. "She’s our engine."
Cox scored the last two baskets of the third quarter to give Holt a 32-19 lead.
In the fourth quarter, ACA’s Ashton Belew and Ally English made consecutive baskets to cut the deficit to 34-23. Cox answered with a basket off an offensive rebound.
ACA (2-5, 0-1) managed to cut it to 36-28 as Belew made one of two free throws when Cox fouled out. The Lady Patriots couldn’t score again, and Holt’s Katina Robinson made the last basket by nailing a 3-pointer.
AAliyah Howard added eight points for Holt, which led 24-15 at halftime. Robinson finished with six points.
Freshman forward Haleigh Howell led the Lady Patriots with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Belew scored seven points.
"We’ve got to get more people involved," ACA coach Buddy Sumner said. "We just did not take our shots. Some of our young girls played liked inexperienced girls. We had three ninth-graders out there a lot. They just kind of backed down a little bit. I had a couple of older girls who did not look for their shot like they should have either. We’ll work on that.
"For a ninth-grader, Haleigh played real well. I thought she hustled. She missed some easy shots, but she worked hard."
ACA plays at home Friday against Carbon Hill. Holt plays at home Friday against Northside.
