GRILS ROUNDUP: Marengo Academy wins tournament


GREENSBORO | The Marengo Academy Lady Longhorns defeated host Southern Academy 46-28 in Saturday’s championship game to win the Southern Academy Christmas Tournament. The win kept their season record perfect at 7-0. It was the first loss of the season for Southern Academy.

Tournament MVP Chandler Stenz led the win with 20 points to go with the 16 she scored against Pickens Academy in Friday’s first-round game. Katie Tucker, who joined her on the all-tournament team, scored 13 in the championship game. Andrea Edmonds led the team with 10 rebounds, and both Anna Michael Crocker and Carolyne Baker had nine rebounds.

Katlyn Tidmore, who made the all-tournament team, led Southern Academy in the final with 12 points.

The all-tournament team also included Southern Academy’s Shelbie Clary, Morgan Academy’s Lauren Yeldell and Pickens Academy’s Elisabeth Hankins.

Marengo Academy plays at Clarke Prep at 6 p.m. Monday.

Southern Academy (4-1) will again play Marengo Academy at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Linden.

 

Pickens Academy 58,

Morgan Academy 23

GREENSBORO | In the consolation final of the Southern Academy Christmas Tournament, Pickens Academy’s Elisabeth Hankins, who was voted to the all-tournament team, led the Lady Pirates with 14 points and seven rebounds.

Marion Colbin had 10 points and eight rebounds, and Whitney Lowe and Haley Garrison both scored eight points.

Pickens Academy (5-1) will play at Sumter Academy at 6 p.m. Monday.

 

Tuscaloosa Academy 41,

Hooper Academy 20

TUSCALOOSA | Addison Harrison scored 10 points and Krissy Pruitt nine for Tuscaloosa Academy.

Morgan Maxwell was the high scorer for Hooper Academy with nine points.

Tuscaloosa Academy (7-1) hosts Tuscaloosa Christian at 3:30 p.m. Monday.

 

Holy Spirit 57,

St. Bernard Prep 23

BIRMINGHAM | Tamera Giles scored 23 points for Holy Spirit in John Carroll High’s Beacon of Hope Classic.

Victoria Lavender scored 16 and Caroline Sisson 14 for the Lady Titans.

Holy Spirit (7-1) hosts West Blocton at 5:30 p.m. Monday.

 

Akron 62,

Hale County 31

AKRON | Dequandra Lyles scored 16, Tangi Crews 11 and LovPrincess Harris scored 10 to lead Akron.

Gabby Steele led Hale County with 12 points.

Akron (3-3) hosts Aliceville on Monday.

 

Greensboro 64, Akron 39

GREENSBORO | Malesha Willams had 37 points and 10 rebounds for Greensboro on Friday.

Zania Wiggins’ 15 points and Shawnderyl Watford added eight points and 10 rebounds for Greensboro.

Lovprincess Harris led Akron with 15 points.

Greensboro (2-3) will host Gordo at 5 p.m. Thursday.

 

Lamar County 51,

Sulligent 48

VERNON | Malika Swanigan scored 30 points to lead Lamar County on Friday. Kelsey Myles had six points.

Paige Dean led Sulligent with 10 points.

Lamar County (3-0) plays at Oakman on Tuesday.

 

Sumter Central 52,

Greene County 42

EUTAW | Courtney Harris and Denetria Ruffin both scored 12 and Haven Moore scored 10 to lead Sumter Central.

The high scorer for Greene County was Sacorya Jackson with nine points.

Sumter Central (8-1) hosts Northridge at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
