BOYS ROUNDUP: Holt nips Panthers on Foster’s layup in overtime

BROOKWOOD | Jailon Foster sank a layup with 1.5 seconds left in overtime Tuesday night, and the Holt High School boys basketball team defeated Brookwood 55-53.

Brookwood managed to launch a final shot before time expired, but the ball hit the backboard.

"It was just a tough, hard-fought game," Holt coach Torrance Beard said.

Devin Crawford scored 29 points and collected seven rebounds to lead Holt (1-0).

Beard praised the defensive effort of Tyler Davis, who was assigned to guard Cody Gaither, Brookwood’s leading scorer.

Gaither led the Panthers with 18 points, and Zach Lee had 14. Lee’s basket tied the score at 49 in the fourth quarter and forced overtime.

Brookwood’s Vic Marshall had nine rebounds, and Justin Mickens dished out eight assists.

Brookwood (0-4) plays at home Thursday against Northridge. Holt plays at Akron on Friday.


American Christian 56, Altamont 26

TUSCALOOSA | Led by Collin Crowe, American Christian Academy opened the season with a victory.

Crowe finished with 14 points. Blake Sanderson added 11, and Carter McGill scored 10 points.

Brendon Sutton had 10 points to lead Altamont.

ACA will play at Akron at 7 p.m. Thursday.


South Lamar 71, Brilliant 61

BRILLIANT | Jydarren Cox hit seven 3-pointers to lead South Lamar (2-0).

Cox finished with 30 points, six rebounds and five steals to lead South Lamar. Marquis Mitchell had 13 points, while Dave Cole had 10 points and seven rebounds. Holden Fields added eight points.

Brilliant (0-1) was led by Chance Key, who had 27 points, and Blake Henderson, who had 23 points.


Holy Spirit 56, West Blocton 40

WEST BLOCTON | The Titans were led by Jordan Giles’ 18 points and Noah Sutton added 10 points in the season opener for both teams.

West Blocton was led by Damien Davis, who had 14 points.

Holy Spirit will host Altamont at 7 p.m. Thursday.


Paul W. Bryant 66, Greensboro 50

COTTONDALE | James Currington had a double-double to lead the Stampede (4-0).

Currington had 12 points, 12 rebounds and two blocks. Bryant’s Dexter Hood led all scorers with 20 points and three steals while Kevin Holland added 15 points and five rebounds.

Marcus Anthony and Fred Stewart each had seven assists.

Greensboro (0-1) was led by Jimmie Taylor, who scored 17 points, and Donald King with 13 points.

Bryant will host Hillcrest at 7:30 p.m. Friday


Central 52, Hillcrest 47, OT

TUSCALOOSA | Terrance Rice made two free throws for Central (3-1) to put the game of reach in overtime.

Rice finished with six points and eight assists and Central’s Javaris Richey led all scorers with 21 points.

For Hillcrest, Mike Davis had 13 points and Matt Reed had 12 points. Rayshaun Tubbs scored 10 points.

Central is scheduled to play at Northridge on Friday.
