Hubbertville's Dillard named Player of the Week


The Hubbertville Lions traveled Friday to play unbeaten and No. 2-ranked Ragland in the AHSAA Class 1A playoffs. Aaron Dillard’s contributions helped the Lions secure homefield advantage for the second round.

Dillard scored his sixth and final touchdown with 47 seconds left as Hubbertville defeated Ragland 42-35. Dillard rushed for 269 yards on 40 carries and recorded 12 tackles, two for a loss. For his efforts, Dillard earned High School Football Player of the Week honors from The Tuscaloosa News.

Several other players had standout performances to garner honorable mention:

n Jeremy McMullen of Aliceville carried 40 times for 327 yards and five touchdowns as the Yellow Jackets beat Elba 42-25 in the Class 2A playoffs. McMullen scored on runs of 15, 27, 1, 12 and 25 yards.

n Marqueze Marshall led the Aliceville defense with 15 tackles in the win over Elba.

n Tyler Gates of Tuscaloosa County threw for 262 yards and three touchdowns in a 38-28 win over Gardendale in the Class 6A playoffs.

n Marquis Shelton of Linden rushed for 221 yards and three touchdowns in a 39-7 win over Kinston in the Class 1A playoffs. Shelton scored on runs of 98, 2 and 71 yards.

n Terrance "Tank" Hollingsworth of Berry rushed for 169 yards on 22 carries in the Wildcats’ 28-8 win over Addison in the Class 1A playoffs. Hollingsworth, who had eight tackles, scored on a 70-yard interception return, a 3-yard reception and a 77-yard run.

n Clancy Brown of Berry had 18 tackles and two of the Wildcats’ eight sacks in the win over Addison.

n Jaevon Walton of Tuscaloosa Academy rushed for 173 yards on 11 carries and scored three touchdowns as the undefeated Knights beat Fort Dale Academy 34-0 to advance to the AISA Class AAA championship game. Walton scored on runs of 3, 3 and 55 yards.

n Josh Lewis of Pickens Academy ran for three touchdowns as the Pirates beat Ashford Academy 46-33 to advance to the AISA Class A championship game.

n Jermarcus Brown of Pickens County gained 186 yards on 15 carries and scored two touchdowns in a 63-0 win over Falkville in the Class 1A playoffs. Brown scored on a 69-yard run and caught a 15-yard touchdown pass.

n Dallas Cockerham of Lamar County ran for two touchdowns and threw a scoring pass in a 39-24 win over New Brockton in the Class 2A playoffs. Cockerham gained 74 yards with touchdown runs of 1 and 2 yards. He completed 10 of 15 passes for 159 yards with a 55-yard touchdown pass.

n Marcellus Redmond of Fayette County scored on runs of 14, 7 and 13 yards in a 35-16 win over B.B. Comer in the Class 3A playoffs.

n Tyrelle Barnett of Demopolis scored on a 45-yard fumble return and a 26-yard interception return as the Tigers defeated Sylacauga 49-20 in the Class 5A playoffs.
