GORDO | Gordo High School sailed past Holt at the Greenwave’s homecoming game, shutting out the Ironmen, 42-0, on Friday night.
Junior quarterback Lane Moss completed a 40-yard touchdown pass to Devin Prude to put Gordo on the scoreboard after 97 seconds of play in the Class 3A, Region 3 game.
“I went to my reads and I saw a guy open, so I just threw it out there to him, and he made a play for me,” Moss said.
Gordo led by 14 points after Tyvon Martin scored on a 2-yard touchdown run in the first quarter.
By halftime, Holt trailed by 35 points. Two more touchdown passes from Moss combined for 40 yards, and an 8-yard touchdown run from Day’lon Rice increased Gordo’s lead.
“That’s been our Achilles heel all year,” Gordo coach David McKinney said.
“We always start slow. We’ve been trying to up the tempo in practice and find ways to get better and come out hot from the beginning.”
He added that homecoming excitement affected his team’s concentration.
“Homecoming has 10,000 distractions going along with it, and I think our mind was just disarrayed a little bit at the beginning, but we got it going and we finally caught up and did a little bit better,” he said.
Holt coach Kenny Crowe said the Ironmen’s defensive effort was some of the best he’s seen all season.
“They’re playing as hard as they can play. After a while, they’re doing all they can do, and I can’t really gripe about that.” Crowe said.
Gordo used the second half to give other players exposure on the field, including Malcolm Nicholson, who had a 43-yard touchdown run for the final score.
“They work hard every week, too,” McKinney said of the underclassmen. “They’re the guys that give us looks all week long, and that’s our future, so any chance we get a chance, we play them.”
For the game, Moss completed 9 of 14 passes for 172 yards and three touchdowns, while Nicholson rushed for 61 yards on two attempts, followed by Rice with 43 yards on four attempts.
Next week, Gordo (7-2, 6-1 Class 3A, Region 3) will visit Pickens County, while Holt (1-8, 1-6) will host Brookwood.
