TUSCALOOSA | The Tuscaloosa Academy volleyball team advanced in the AISA Class 3A playoffs by sweeping Autauga Academy on Monday.
Tuscaloosa Academy won 25-19, 26-24, 25-11.
Tuscaloosa Academy improved to 13-5, but coach Anita Walker said the win wasn’t easy.
"They had us worried a little bit in the second game," said Walker, whose team recorded its third win over the Lady Generals. "We made some changes at the last minute, and some players got in there and pulled us through."
Celia Gatewood had nine digs, seven assists, three aces and two kills for the Lady Knights. Shelby Curry had nine digs, eight kills, five aces and one assist. Brittany Ledbetter had eight assists, six aces, four digs and two kills.
Walker said Curry had six kills in the second game, and Ledbetter started the third game by serving six aces.
"That kind of got us going real good," Walker said.
Tuscaloosa Academy continues regional play today at Morgan Academy in Selma. The Lady Knights, will play Morgan Academy at 3 this afternoon. Other participating teams are Kingwood Christian and Escambia Academy.
Walker said the top two teams will advance to play Saturday in the AISA Tournament at Montgomery’s Faulkner University.
"We’re trying to turn volleyball around," said Walker, a first-year coach for the Lady Knights. "I hope we’re heading in the right direction. We want to be known as one of the competitive teams here at Tuscaloosa Academy."
