The Linden Patriots head into a new football season with a No. 2 ranking in the Alabama Sports Writers Association poll.

Linden, coached by Andro Williams, went 13-2 last season. The Patriots advanced to the AHSAA Class 1A championship game but lost to Marion County 23-12 at the University of Alabama’s Bryant-Denny Stadium.

Marion County, which finished at 14-1, claimed the top spot in the classification with 19 first-place votes and 297 points. Linden had six first-place votes and 285 points. Other West Alabama teams ranked in Class 1A were No. 6 Pickens County (11-2) and No. 10 Berry (10-2). Berry was the only team to defeat Marion County last season.

In Class 6A, Northridge, which posted a school best 10-2 record in 2011, tied Vestavia Hills for ninth. Hillcrest (12-1), which has a new head coach in Scott Martin, didn’t crack the top 10 but was credit with 41 poll points.

Demopolis, coming off a 6-5 season, earned 16 points in the Class 5A poll.

Bibb County, which had a 12-1 record last season, was ranked No. 6 in Class 4A with 84 points. Mike McCombs is the new head coach at Bibb County.

West Alabama teams receiving votes in Class 3A were Fayette County (9-4), Gordo (9-3), American Christian Academy (12-2) and Greene County (7-4). Fayette County and Greene County were in Class 4A last season, while ACA was in Class 2A.
