Northridge wide receiver James Cox planned to make an early decision. Cincinnati was a favorite a week ago to land his commitment, but he pulled the trigger for Southern Miss on Monday.

"The opportunity to get on the field early was a big reason for my decision," Cox said. "The academics also played a big part. I bonded well with the coaches. I just decided to go ahead and commit.

"I went down there today for a visit. The visit was good. It's not too far from home. I enjoyed myself on campus and getting to see the stadium. The coaches talked to me about the depth chart. They have four junior wide receivers. It's a good opportunity to get on the field early."

Southern Miss offered Cox a scholarship during the spring. His comfort level with the coaching staff played a major role in his decision.

"They came out to the school and offered me," Cox said. "It was the same day Arkansas offered me. I stayed in contact with them. I felt comfortable with them. I love the coaching staff. They are on the rise. One thing they do there is win. I am ready to put those pads on."

Cox will take all his official visits. He knows of two other trips in addition to Southern Miss.

"I will still take five official visits," Cox said. "I will definitely take visits to Cincinnati, Southern Miss and probably Arizona State. All the pressure is off my shoulder. I can focus on school. It's not going to be a distraction. Every time I go in meetings I always get calls. I can really focus on helping my team get better."
